Beware Counterfeit iPhone Chargers
There has been much research lately regarding the safety of counterfeit products, especially power adapters. The sheer number of electrical products that require the use of power adapters makes this category ripe for competition, often from less than reputable manufacturers and companies. Safety should never be compromised and independent third party testing is the best way for all parties to remain safe when using the product.
Underwriter Laboratories research proved exactly how risky counterfeit power chargers can be. They recently tested 400 samples of power chargers compatible with iPhones. Of the 400 sampled, a whopping 99% failed safety testing. Twleve of the failed chargers were so poorly designed and constructed that death by lethal electrocution was a distinct possibility.
It is not always easy to tell a counterfeit charger from the UL-approved Apple chargers. The following are some warning signs that should not be ignored:
- unusually low price compared with a genuine Apple iPhone adapter
- grammatical or spelling errors on packaging
- non-white colors
Always look for a certification mark such as a UL Mark to indicate that the device in question has been tested for compliance with applicable safety standards. A bargain price is only a good deal if the product performs as anticipated, with no risk of harm to the users. Better safe than sorry.
